2. Course Overview
Comprehensive Description: Students will read selections from the Greek Anthology, a collection of Greek poetry spanning many centuries, and including authors such as Callimachus, Nossis, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Palladas. These poems are typically short, not too difficult, and most importantly, beautiful. They cover a range of genres: some are love poems, others devotional. Some contain grave ethical teachings, others are simply hilarious. One of them (σκηνὴ πᾶς ὁ βίος) anticipates Shakespeare’s “All the world’s a stage” by over a millennium. In reading these poems, we will appreciate the variety of Ancient Greek poetic artistry, along with getting a chance to practice reciting and memorizing poems in a variety of meters.
