One of the most challenging aspects of beginner Latin study is finding sufficient comprehensive input to continue acquiring and strengthening vocabulary and grammar while reading textbooks. This course aims to fulfill the purpose that R. B. Appleton and W. H. S. Jones set for themselves when writing Pōns Tironum (1924): to create a bridge guiding beginner learners toward the reading of Latin authors, using a narrative that follows the life of a Roman child within his historical and social context. Thus, the core objective of this course is to provide sustained exposure to Latin morphosyntax and usage, enabling students to develop fluency and comprehension.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Speak Latin with greater confidence and fluency in classroom contexts.
Comprehend texts of moderate difficulty, including continuous narrative passages.
Apply strategies and tools for autonomous Latin study, enabling continued independent learning beyond the classroom.
Recognize and use Latin morphological and syntactic structures accurately in context.
